TSA Forum: Catalogue and Pattern Book Housing
Catalogue housing is having a comeback.
In a country with a long tradition of catalogue housing—whether it was the mail-ordered Eaton’s housing of the early 1900s or the government-sanctioned CMHC Small House Design of the 1960s and 70s—it seems pattern books, catalogues, and pre-approved housing designs are re-emerging as governments at all levels look for ways to respond to the ever-present housing crisis.
But Canada is not alone in this strategy. Across the globe, many other jurisdictions are looking towards pattern books and catalogues as ways to accelerate housing construction. And while building more housing may be their primary purpose, underlying many of these catalogues are ambitious goals of proliferating best practices in terms of sustainability, liveability, and design excellence. The question is: are they working?
Join us online for this international forum as speakers from Canada, Sweden, and Australia share their jurisdiction’s contemporary examples of pattern book and catalogue housing, as well as the motivations, ambitions and strategies behind them. Their presentations will be followed by a moderated panel discussion where we’ll explore the similarities and differences amongst these catalogues, including their effectiveness and limitations.
