TSA Tours at Doors Open Toronto 2025: St. James Park Playground

St. James Park is one of Toronto’s oldest and most beloved downtown public spaces situated in the heart of the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood. With its concept derived through an extensive community consultation process, the theming and desired components of the playground took inspiration from the site’s rich history, resulting in a contextually-nestled family environment with play features that reference the market heritage and narrative. The award-winning playground and surrounding park area by PMA Landscape Architects and Earthscape Play includes themed components such as a 3-platform high slide, Asparagus climbers, and an Ice Cream Cone climber—features designed to inspire children’s creativity and offer challenging and interesting play opportunities.

Join the Toronto Society of Architects (TSA), Earthscape Play, and PMA Landscape Architects on this unique tour led by the designers behind the project, as they reflect back on the process of creating the park, from the initial community consultation process to finalizing the fun theme to installation, and some of the challenges met along the way. We’ll also discuss the design theory behind the playground, including risky play and accessible/inclusive play.

This is one of three tours organized by the TSA for Doors Open Toronto 2025 exploring this year’s theme: play. Check out our tours for St. Andrew’s Playground Park and The Sara Jackman Playground for more opportunities to learn about playground design in our city.
