TSA Technical Workshop: Calculating Total Energy Use Intensity

We all know measuring the energy efficiency of our buildings is critical if we are to achieve a more sustainable future. After all, how can we improve on our designs if we don’t have the energy model or performance data? But getting those numbers can often be an arduous and complex task, more suited for a sustainability consultant than an architect. In comes OBJECTIVE v3, a pay-what-you-can tool, originally developed by the OAA and now OpenBuilding, designed specifically for Ontario Architects to better understand energy use—both targeted and actual.

Appropriate for both Part 9 and Part 3 buildings, this tool is the latest open source building code review, targeting, and TEUI measurement tool that looks at past utility bills to do predictive energy calculations based on case studies. Using the TEUI calculator can help AEC professionals establish energy and carbon targets from the outset of their projects, lower their projects’ carbon footprint, and better verify their buildings’ post-occupancy performance results, among many other benefits. And with a new version of the tool now officially launched, now is the perfect time to learn how to use it!

Who better to teach you how to use the calculator than the people behind its development? The TSA is excited to welcome architect and building science lecturer Andy Thomson from the OpenBuilding team for an in-person lecture and hands-on workshop unpacking the newest version of this open source TEUI calculator.

During this jam-packed half-day workshop you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the reasons behind the development of the TEUI Building Energy Rating System and an overview of the tool’s basics.
  • Work with a team to complete a TEUI 3 baseline document using a Case Study Guide,
  • Engage in hands-on, interactive demonstrations highlighting fundamental building science concepts.

By the end of this session you will leave with an understanding of why and how to use the OBJECTIVE v3, as well as a unique and visceral new outlook on building science fundamentals.
