TSA Technical Series: Biodegradable Carpeting 101

When we think of sustainable architecture, our focus is often on things like structure, HVAC systems, and the building envelope—but what about interior finishes? With interior spaces more likely to undergo numerous renovations throughout a building’s lifetime, what we specify on the inside can often have big repercussions on a building’s overall environmental impact. Carpet, for example, is one of North America’s most common floor finishes, but 75% of them are made of petroleum-based derivatives and only 5% of them are recycled, meaning the vast majority of our carpets end in landfills. Identifying more sustainable alternatives, including those easier to recycle and made of natural, biodegradable materials, is an important part of designing a more sustainable future.

In this TSA Technical Lecture, Ali McMurter, Managing Partner of Creative Matters Inc., will introduce us to the world of natural fibre carpets, exploring their benefits and practicalities, and how they measure up in key metrics like cost, durability, and of course, environmental impact. The presentation will include an overview of carpet construction types, as well as best practices in terms of installation and maintenance.

During this lecture, participants will learn more about:

  • Construction Methods: Woven Axminster (EcoAx), tufted wool broadloom, and compostable nylon carpeting.
  • Durability & Performance: How fiber type, density, and construction impact wear resistance and longevity.
  • Maintenance Considerations: Cleaning requirements, stain resistance, and upkeep for different carpet types.
  • Installation Factors: Subfloor preparation, adhesive options, and best practices for longevity.
  • Cost Comparisons: Material and installation cost differences among woven, tufted, and biodegradable carpet options.
  • Sustainability & Design: How eco-conscious materials contribute to long-term environmental goals without compromising aesthetics.
