Call for Board Members: Architectural Conservancy Ontario, Toronto Branch
Are you passionate about Toronto’s stories and heritage?
ACOTO is the founding branch of the Architectural Conservancy Ontario (“ACO”) linked to a network of other branches and members throughout Ontario and the national heritage network. Since 1933 this volunteer-led charity has been involved in preserving Toronto’s architectural and environmental heritage by helping communities and owners preserve stories, buildings and structures of architectural merit and places of natural beauty or cultural interest. For example, ACOTO was actively involved in saving Union Station from demolition. The organization strategically uses education through its annual Symposium, publications, TO Built database, and advocacy to celebrate and encourage the conservation of structures and landscapes of cultural, architectural, and historic significance, to benefit all Torontonians.
Time Commitment: 3-6 hours per month with one monthly meeting except in July and August.
ACOTO Board Members Role
• Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the organization and its activities
• Participate in branch heritage advocacy
• Participate/lead branch activities such as the annual symposium, advocacy and education projects
• Practice high standards of confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest
• Ensure organizational accountability and transparency
• Facilitate active and meaningful external relationships
Ideal Candidate
• Toronto-based with a keen interest or involvement with heritage, architecture, or culture
• Not-for-profit board governance experience desirable, but not essential
• Specific expertise in heritage conservation, finance, database management
photography/graphic design and grant writing welcome, but not essential
• We are committed to a broad definition of heritage and welcomes candidates who
contribute diversity to that vision
