TSA Technical Series: Cement, Concrete, and the Path to Decarbonization

Few materials in architecture, engineering, and construction are as ubiquitous as cement and concrete. But how much do we really know about how it’s made, where it comes from, and most importantly: its environmental impact?

Join us for a TSA Technical Lecture with Rob Cooney of the Cement Association of Canada, as we explore the fundamentals of cement and concrete through the lens of sustainability and decarbonization. This session will unpack the basic principles behind cement production, its environmental footprint, and the innovations shaping lower-carbon concrete today. We’ll look at examples of ready-mix plant operations, examine Ontario’s local supply chain, and address common misconceptions about concrete’s role in the built environment. The session will conclude with an overview of the industry’s “Concrete Zero” roadmap and its strategies for achieving net-zero targets.

At this session, our speaker will:

  • Review the composition and emissions profile of cement and concrete
  • Identify sustainability solutions for cement and concrete products and solutions
  • Address misconceptions and sustainability concerns about concrete
  • Explore the local supply chain and Canada’s net-zero transition initiative
