Market Gallery Exhibit: At Home in Toronto
What does home mean to you? Discover rarely seen artifacts from the City’s collections and items from community members. Explore the many ways we define, create and carry home with us. From a First World War soldier’s return ticket home to a precious family object stewarded by multiple generations, encounter belongings, voices and stories of Toronto artists, makers, entrepreneurs and community leaders as they share their unique perspectives on belonging, identity and place. These powerful objects offer fresh, heartfelt perspectives on what it means to find, make or remember home.
At Home in Toronto includes the artworks of Rebecca Baird, Carl Beam, Fred Hagan, Robert Houle, Luis Jacob, Kit Li, Raoul Olou, Yasmine Louis and Natalie Wood, as well as loaned works by local artists Doug Brown and Frantz Brent-Harris.
Please note the exhibit is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Steps above the bustling St. Lawrence Market lies the Market Gallery – an intimate, historic exhibition space. What was once Toronto’s first purpose-built City Council Chambers now houses rotating exhibits that dive deep into the history of our city.
Drawing from the City’s extensive collection of fine art, historic artifacts, and archeological specimens, these exhibits let you experience first-hand the evolution of Toronto’s ever-changing identity. Through the use of documents, film, photography and objects, you can walk through the timeline of what made Toronto the city it is today – and see where it’s going next.
Alongside talks, tours and workshops, Market Gallery exhibitions provide a taste of the city: past, present and future.
