Facadism: An Interdisciplinary Panel with ERA Architects

“You don’t finish a building: you start it…” –Stewart Brand, How Buildings Learn

Join ERA Architects for a unique conversation about architectural facadism.

An interdisciplinary panel featuring Jessica Mace (Assistant Professor of Canadian Art and Architecture at the University of Toronto), Stefan Novakovic (Senior Editor at Azure Magazine), and Michael McClelland (Founding Principal at ERA Architects) will discuss the practice of preserving the facades of existing (often heritage) buildings, demolishing the rest, and constructing new architecture behind, within, and around them to create a novel built form.

Moderated by Alessandro Tersigni (Cultural Critic, ERA Architects), this discourse will explore facadism’s cultural, historical, practical, and social emanations. What’s the relationship between the exterior and the interior of a building? Does that relationship differ for architects and the public? How is change related to cultural value? What is authenticity in the built environment? How will facadism in Canada be viewed a century from now?
