Exhibition: Carbon Confessions

As the world faces an increasingly urgent climate crisis, there is growing pressure for the construction industry to reduce its carbon emissions, prompting a rethink of the way buildings are developed. Carbon Confessions, a travelling exhibition by Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, reveals what that looks like in practice. From 9 May to 22 August 2026, the exhibition will be visiting Toronto, offering a candid look at the ideas, ideals, everyday actions – and yes, the missteps and missed opportunities – of MVRDV’s quest for carbon reductions.

Drawing on more than three decades of work, the exhibition shares lessons from experiments, milestones, and missed opportunities, showing how sustainable ambitions evolve in practice. In Toronto, where climate ambitions are increasingly tied to how the city builds, questions of carbon become questions of architecture. The exhibition reflects this context through content tailored to the local framework, including the Toronto Green Standard and MVRDV’s projects in Canada.

Presented as a research-led journey, Carbon Confessions explores themes such as adaptive reuse, material experimentation, and the use of digital tools, highlighting how carbon considerations are shaping decisions around materials, performance, lifespan, and adaptation. Designed with minimal waste, the exhibition itself uses repurposed materials, reinforcing MVRDV’s commitment to resourcefulness.

The exhibition also shifts between display and event space, creating room for an active public programme of talks and discussions throughout its run. Visitors are invited to engage in an open dialogue on the carbon challenge in the built environment, compare approaches, and reflect on how design can contribute to more adaptive and regenerative cities.
