Doors Open Toronto 2023 – The Shape and Sound of Performance

From the symphony to musical theatre, Toronto is home to some of the most important and ambitious performance halls in the country, but have you ever wondered why they look (and sound) the way they do?

Come take a walk with the Toronto Society of Architects as we explore the relationship between performance, sound and architecture through case-studies in our city’s very own Entertainment District. From traditional shoe-box theatres to ground-breaking vineyard halls, we’ll share the history, ideas and principles that shape them. Along the way, we’ll dispel some common misconceptions about acoustics, and explain how materials, shape and size of rooms play a critical role in the quality, loudness and clarity of performances they house.
