OAA Webinar: Cx 201 – What Are the Biggest Challenges in Commissioning?
This presentation will provide architects with fundamental information about the commissioning process and will emphasize the importance of an organized approach to commissioning in order to help achieve a successful project.
Commissioning has evolved over the past decade to become one of the most critical aspects for the successful delivery of projects. This evolution is ongoing and will be for many years to come and in order to more efficiently manage this process we must understand where the perils lie. It is important to know where we must concentrate our efforts and how we should prepare ourselves for the challenges.
It is impossible to have a “one size fits all” solution for all commissioning projects. This presentation will use case studies that provide real examples of commissioning challenges. These include the importance of scheduling, design reviews, controls, air balancing and resource allocation. The case studies are collected from hundreds of projects that Rino and his team have worked on over the years and summarizes how the same issues always seem to come up time and time again. Solutions will be presented that will allow you to identify the challenges ahead of time, will provide you with tools to meet those challenges and will (hopefully) yield a more successful project.

Rino Zan, P.Eng – Principal, Commissioning Department Manager
Rino is a principal and the Commissioning Department Manager in the Buildings and Facilities Engineering Group at Morrison Hershfield. He has over 33 years’ experience in all aspects of mechanical, electrical, IT and security system design, construction and project management. Rino has worked on a wide variety of domestic and international projects in both the private and public sectors including airports, hotels, high-rise office buildings, hospitals, high-security buildings, mission critical facilities, schools, public transportation facilities and data centers.
Rino manages the Commissioning service line at MH and has direct involvement in all Commissioning projects being executed by MH. His concerns focus on the delivery of commissioning services that provide value and add to the client’s project through improved design, construction and operability.
Prior to joining Morrison Hershfield Rino obtained extensive experience in mechanical, electrical, security and IT infrastructure design while helping to successfully deliver projects for various financial institutions, recreational facilities, healthcare facilities and multiple Government of Canada mission critical facilities (classified). While working on these projects Rino completed field reviews, determined project parameters, directed designers, prepared construction documentation including drawings and specifications as well as completing construction administration duties. Rino’s engineering career started at Bell Canada where he accumulated critical telephony design experience and a strong appreciation for system redundancy and safeguarding. His career then brought him to the Bank of Nova Scotia where he was instrumental in preparing IT infrastructure cabling standards for numerous nationwide and international rollouts. Immediately prior to coming to MH he worked for ten years in the private consulting sector where he further expanded his project design and management skills.
