TSA Forum: Designing Quality Housing

When it comes to housing, much of the discussion focuses on quantity—the 10s of thousands of homes we need to build to address Canada’s housing supply gap—but increasingly, more and more Torontonians are turning their attention to the quality of these units. Good quality housing not only improves everyday life, but also increases the resilience and durability of our housing stock. And in the day-to-day reality of multi-unit residential inhabitants, no element of design has a bigger impact on life than the unit layout.

In this Urban Affairs Forum, we are turning the housing discussion inside out and asking the question: “What does ‘good quality housing’ mean from the unit perspective?” Our three speakers have been asked to reflect on the forces that have shaped our current housing stock, the impact on unit design on quality of life, and what better quality housing looks like in Toronto’s multi-unit residential construction.

This forum is the second on housing that the TSA has held this year. beginning the conversation with various models of housing catalogs. If you’d like to view this recording, along with other TSA forums and talks, please visit our Past Lectures Library.
