TSA Building Tour: Indigenous Hub
To kick off our 2026 TSA Building Tour season, we’re excited to tour the recently-completed Indigenous Hub, a complex of community, commercial, and residential buildings embodying reconciliation through design.
Located in the West Don Lands and anchored by the Anishnawbe Health Toronto community health centre (AHT), the Indigenous Hub reclaims a formerly industrial site as a place for community, healing, and belonging. Its distinctive architecture, from site plan to material expression, was guided by Indigenous knowledge systems, symbolism, and ceremony. As long-time Executive Director of the AHT, the late Joe Hester, put it to Canadian Architect: “We wanted to bring an architecture to the Toronto landscape that represents us culturally, which then, of course, our community would see as something they could be proud of.” Grounded in Indigenous health practices, the development includes rental and condominium residences, retail space, a restored industrial-era heritage building, and a privately-owned public gathering space.
During the tour, we’ll have the opportunity to hear directly from some of the people involved in the design and delivery of this remarkable complex, as well as visit numerous spaces including the Health Centre, Miziwee Biik Indigenous Employment & Training Centre, the Canary Building, and several outdoor spaces. The tour will be led by representatives from Stantec Architecture, BDP Quadrangle, and Two Row Architect.

About the Project: Indigenous Hub
The Indigenous Hub, located in the West Don Lands, is a landmark collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners that exemplifies reconciliation through design. Conceived in collaboration between Anishnawbe Health Toronto, Miziwe Biik, Dream, Kilmer, Tricon, Stantec Architecture, BDP Quadrangle, Two Row Architect, ERA Architects, EllisDon, Harbridge and Cross, and Joseph Sagaj, the Hub integrates healthcare, housing, education, childcare, training and commercial spaces within a cohesive, community-led campus. Anchored by the 4,000-square-metre Anishnawbe Health Toronto community health centre, grounded in Indigenous health practices, the development includes rental and condominium residences, retail space, a restored industrial-era heritage building, and a privately-owned public gathering space.
The design process was centred on Indigenous values of ceremony, connection to the land and provision of a community voice—reinterpreting materials and spatial traditions to create a site of cultural presence and resilience. Landscape elements reflect natural and symbolic narratives, while ceremonial requirements shaped foundational design decisions. As a precedent-setting model of Indigenous self-determination and inclusive urbanism, the Hub transforms a once-contaminated industrial site into a place of healing, learning and belonging.
This project also redefines urban sustainability and reconciliation through design, blending traditional and contemporary architecture to honour the land, and create a model for inclusive and resilient city-building. All structures include green roofs—notably planted with native species—to help collect and use rainwater for irrigation.
