TSA Technical Series: Escalators

Escalators are everywhere. From shopping malls to transit stations, office towers to the PATH, escalators are essential to the efficient and safe circulation of tens of thousands of people as they make their way through our cities. And with all the new and expanded mass-transit projects happening in the coming years, there will likely be a significant increase in escalator installations in the GTA and across Canada.

Join us for this one hour virtual lecture as Martin Ouimet of KJA Consultants Inc.provides us an introduction to high-level planning for escalators, particularly in early design phases of projects, and important decisions that need to be made early in design. We will look at how to space-proof escalators in concept design, the differences between escalator types and general trends in the industry. Escalator capacity limits will be briefly discussed. A quick highlight of changes to the code introduced in the B44-19 will also be included. We’ll wrap up by discussing some of the common pitfalls and mistakes made during preliminary design development as it relates to escalators.
