Upcoming Events

This presentation will present this ground breaking project’s technical and political journey from an EUI of over 450 to zero.  The innovations in this project include envelope and window upgrades featuring electrochromatic glazing, innovative ground source energy exchange, cutting edge solar thermal and PV technology among other innovations.  The interior design and space planning for the project incorporates modular adaptable furniture, innovative lighting and lighting control, state of the art telecommunication and IT, and digital display technology all within a modernized open and flexible office environment.   

The technical and design evolution of the project will be illustrated and discussed by Project Architect David Fujiwara, B. Arch, OAA.  An overview of the political and governance evolution of the project will be provided by John Stephenson, B. Arch, OAA, MAA, FRAIC, Immediate Past President, Ontario Association of Architects.

David Fujiwara is an architect and has his own design firm since 1984. He has specialized in building renovations, and additions.

After graduating from U of T in 1978 his first work was the construction of a country house designed by Carmen Corneil, living on site for a year and working with all trades.

In 2005 he received an Award of Excellence from the OAA for the design of 546 Richmond St. West – Sustainable Townhouse, a renovation/ addition with sustainable design principles.

The Now House – (near) Net Zero Energy Healthy House, the renovation of a 1950’s wartime wood frame house was a 2007 CMHC Equilibrium House competition winner.

John Stephenson is a founding and past naging partner of FORM Architecture Engineering in Thunder Bay, now Form Studio Architects Inc.,He has extensive experience with housing, health care and care and treatment projects which cross the full continuum of care for seniors. His experience includes the design, development and ownership of independent living, retirement living, supportive housing, long term care and mental health rehabilitation projects. Additionally, his project experience and expertise also includes individual research and training including a portfolio of projects in restoration, adaptive re-use of heritage buildings and an extensive portfolio of educational and commercial building projects.

Throughout John’s career he has maintained an almost continuous involvement in the Ontario Association of Architects in a variety of volunteer capacities. Mr. Stephenson is a frequent public speaker about sustainable design for the built environment for local, regional and provincial audiences.
