We should all be grateful for the architects and designers of this world. They are the people who help to make our environment more comfortable and convenient. But what about the times when, by design or neglect, they create things that are uncomfortable and downright inconvenient? Should we be grateful for that too? The answer in many cases is yes. Discomfort is an important and, at times, a necessary part of our existence. In this seminar, we will look at everything from the moral implications of “ugly” architecture to the psychological benefits of design that is unsettling and possibly terrifying.
