LIGHT: What is it and what can you do with it

Beautiful architectural and interior design projects abound. Pairing innovative design approaches with carefully curated space planning and materials, these spaces are marvelous…until they are viewed with artificial light!

Light: the forgotten material that casts the last word upon all materials it encounters. In LIGHT: What is it and what can you do with it, we’ll embark upon an exploratory journey of light, from the power of the sun through to the manipulation of indoor environments,  and how it transforms spaces, human experiences, and our lives. 

During this session, we will delve into real-life examples – through case studies and in the space itself – of the effect of lighting on architectural environments, material selections, and user experience. 

We will conclude with an audience discussion regarding critical success factors to close the gap between design intent and execution, ensuring design decisions and the ensuing experiences are cast in the right light amidst today’s increasingly complex projects.

Marcel Dion, DID,IALD, IES, LC, LEED AP

Founder and Principal, Marcel Dion Lighting Design

Marcel Dion is the Founder and Principal Lighting Designer of Marcel Dion Lighting Design in Toronto, Canada.   With a mere 10-year since founding his award winning lighting design practice, Marcel’s work has received numerous accolades including IES Awards of Merit and Section Awards for the Brookfield Place Heritage Façade, Brookfield Place Allen Lambert Galleria / Sam Pollock Square, Welland Bridge 13, Slack Offices and Mackage retail stores.  

A graduate of Algonquin College’s Interior Design program, Marcel  possesses the unique ability to collaborate with the design team, interpret architectural intent, and craft creative solutions through the fusion of technological nuance and design sensibility. Marcel is a Professional IALD member,  LEED Accredited Professional, and serves as part time lecturer at several Canadian colleges, making fully engaged in the lighting community.

With projects in sectors spanning from retail to residential, hospitality, commercial, entertainment, structure or landscape design, Marcel’s extensive experience and passion for global design and technology makes him one of the key players in the Canadian lighting design landscape. 

Rebecca Ho-Dion

Lighting Design Director, ALULA Lighting Design/THE HIDI GROUP

Rebecca is a Lighting Design Director at ALULA Lighting Design in Toronto, Canada.  With over fifteen years of consulting experience and a Master’s Degree in Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, Rebecca’s specialized education and passion for art and design offer a unique blend of technical skills and design sensitivity that bridge the gap between art and science.  

Rebecca’s impressive international portfolio includes commercial, high-end retail, hospitality, residential and institutional projects such as the Samsung Experience Store, Ryerson University Student Learning Centre, Walt Disney Family Museum (San Francisco), Gucci Fifth Avenue (New York), and the Grand Aquarium Ocean Park (Hong Kong). She is also the proud recipient of numerous lighting awards, including the 2014 IES IIDA Special Citation and Award of Merit for the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia and the 2007 IES IIDA Award of Excellence for the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, USA.  

Rebecca is an active member of the lighting design community, serving as the Canadian Region Coordinator for the International Association of Lighting Designers, as well as the Canadian ambassador for the international Women in Lighting initiative.”
