Summer Building Tour: Pioneer Village Station
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
“Most people using the subway on a Monday morning are probably going to a job they’d rather not do. I wanted to create a space that excites the spirit, at least for a few minutes.”
Will Alsop
Join us for the last summer building tour of 2018 as we wrap up this year’s theme of infrastructure with a visit to Pioneer Village Station – our first ever tour to cross city borders!
About this Building
Pioneer Village Station is one of the six newly opened subway stations of the $3.2 billion extension project, bringing the Yonge-Spadina subway line from Toronto into the City of Vaughan/York Region. The design team is formed by IBI Group, LEA Consulting Ltd and WSP as a Joint Venture, in collaboration with Will Alsop.
Pioneer Village Station includes a 12-Bay TTC bus terminal, a 5-Bay YRRTC bus terminal, 2 entrance buildings, one electrical power substation and an underground station box with knockout panels for future connections. It is a new civic landmark with unique architecture, straddling the border of Toronto and York Region and anchoring a corner of York University Campus.
The station itself is defined by a fluid, continuous connection from a pair of sculptural entrances into the double curved platform concrete ceiling structure. It is then taken further by an interactive artwork that is incorporated throughout this soffit. The flow is dynamic from plan to elevation along with the twisted artwork. There are other stunning architectural elements, such as a 20m cantilevered weathering steel TTC bus terminal soffit, the rockwall, the light cone, and the chandeliers, making the everyday journey an interactive and delight experience.
