This symposium provides a platform for artists to show and discuss their works that touch on the time-frame of the Vietnam War. This will include artists such as Martha Rosler whose work House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home (1967-1972) looked at the war from inside the protests in America that were increasing as the war intensified in the late 1960s. And Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak will show and discuss their work The Afternoon Knows What the Morning Never Suspected (2017) a reflection on Canada’s engagement with this war, one that looks beyond the taking in of the draft dodgers to find a monetary gain, known but conveniently forgotten.

Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak have recently stepped down from their long-term teaching within the Visual Studies program in the Daniels Faculty. After a decade and a half of organizing speakers and seminars for the graduate program (Masters of Visual Studies), this symposium is their final offering for an opportunity to meet and discuss issues of art and artists whose work engages with the political climate of their (our) time.
