Urban Affairs Forum l Does Canada need a National Architecture Policy?

5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Whether intentionally or not, our buildings, landscapes and urban spaces say a lot about us — communicating the values, priorities, and aspirations of those who invested so much in their creation. As the space where we live, work and play, the built environment has an enormous impact not only on our quality of life, but the quality of life of future generations who will inherit the places we have designed.

So, what do we want our built environment to say about us, now and in the future? What values and priorities do we want to guide the design of our cities, and should these values and priorities be coordinated and consistent across our nation as a whole? Could it be time for Canada to adopt a National Architecture Policy, and if so, what exactly does that mean?

Join us for a virtual fireside chat with representatives of some of Toronto’s leading city-building organizations, who will share their own perspectives on the process and content of the emerging National Architecture Policy for Canada, responding to the nationally formulated “Rise for Architecture” Vision.

This event is part of the 2021 DesignTO festival.

The second of two events exploring the potential for a National Architecture Policy for Canada, this discussion will be informed by the draft policy document prepared with the feedback from participants at an earlier Info Session and Workshop featuring Steering Committee Members from the Rise for Architecture Initiative. This workshop will be hosted by the TSA and ACO on January 12 — for more information, visit the TSA’s event page.

About DesignTO

DesignTO Festival is Canada’s leading (and largest) annual design festival that celebrates design as a multidisciplinary form of creative thinking and making, with over 100 exhibitions and events forming Toronto’s design week, January 22-31, 2021. Following public health guidelines, the festival will be held both digitally and in a socially distant manner.

Since 2011, DesignTO has been bringing communities together to celebrate design, by taking art and design out of the studio and into the urban realm.
