A TENACIOUS PLACE
In the rugged landscape of northern Portugal, within the borders of the Peneda Geres National Park, is a sublime mountainous landscape strewn with lichen-covered boulders and jagged granite outcrops interspersed with shrubby patches of gorse, heather and juniper. It is a harsh, desolate place where only the most resolute families eke out a living, practicing time-honoured farming methods that include growing maize and grapes, and raising goats, fowl and free-ranging long-horned cattle.
Blending into the craggy hillsides are dry-stone constructed farm houses, watermills, and outbuildings surrounded by terraced fields delineated by stone walls. Granite paved tracks, some built by Cistercian monks, meander through the landscape connecting the scattered farms and quiet villages seemingly unchanged for hundreds of years. In all its elemental beauty, this place and the people who inhabit it are as tenacious as the stone that defines it.
