The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario’s NextGen is excited to offer its 9th annual Job Shadow Program, taking place in February 2021. This program provides students with an opportunity to network and make key professional connections in their area of choice, learn about future job opportunities and gain experience for their resumes, as well as meet with other young people interested in heritage and get published.

ACO’s 40+ partner organizations, including architecture and engineering firms, government bodies and diverse non-profits, have generously agreed to meet with students or emerging professionals in a virtual capacity to discuss their what they do, their career progressions, opportunities in the field and their industries as a whole.

Given Covid-19 constraints, ACO is planning for hosts and NextGen Participants to meet online. Depending on government regulations in February 2021, any in-person meetings will be arranged at the discretion of the hosting organization.

The Job Shadow might include:
• Discussions of the host’s own career progression
• Sitting-in on meetings/consultations and reviewing planning documents
• Professional reviews of a participant’s portfolio
• Overviews of legislation, guidelines, policies, permitting, etc.
• Assisting with special events
• Assisting on communications/marketing/blogs

If meeting in person can be done safely, activities could include:
• Site visits to past or current projects
• Neighbourhood architecture tours
• Tours of offices, labs, and workshops

The program is open to students and young professionals exploring careers in architecture, heritage conservation, planning, landscape architecture, museums, history, archaeology and related fields. Applicants must be ACO Members. To become a member, please visit the ACO website.

BUILD YOUR RESUME
Our partners have generously committed to meeting (mainly virtually) with a student or emerging professional to discuss their careers, job opportunities in the field and the organizations they work for. By providing you with an opportunity to meet with leaders in their fields, this program will help you build key connections, gain valuable knowledge about your field of choice, and add experience to your resume.

GET PUBLISHED
This is also an opportunity to get published. Job shadow participants will have the option of publishing a post about their experience for the NextGen blog, with the possibility of having it shared to NextGen’s newsletter list on ACO’s social media.

MEET OTHER NEXTGENS
NextGen will be hosting a Zoom Meet-And-Greet for all shadows and NextGen members in the week following the event. This is an opportunity to meet other young people who share an interest in historic preservation.
