Towards a National Architecture Policy for Canada | Info Session and Workshop
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
You might have heard about the current efforts to advance a National Architecture Policy for Canada, but what exactly does that mean, and how would such a policy impact you?
Where they have been implemented around the world, national architecture policies set guidelines and best practices to enhance social, cultural and environmental well-being. These policies can also support politicians, professionals and the public in creating more sustainable and equitable societies. So, what would a National Architecture policy for Canada include? Since 2016, a group of educators and practitioners have been developing a process to answer this question and now they want to hear from you!
Join us for this information session and workshop as members of the Rise for Architecture Steering Committee share the work done to date and solicit feedback on the vision and aspirations for this national document.
During this session we’ll discuss:
- What does an architecture policy entail
- History and context of this initiative
- The four themes of the policy: Place, People, Prosperity and Potential
- Breakout discussions around the four themes
Discussions from this session help shape the draft policy document directly, as well as inform a cross-disciplinary event scheduled for this year’s DesignTO festival, where a number of leading city-building organizations will share their own perspectives on the process and content of the emerging National Architecture Policy for Canada.

This event will be an interactive workshop and consultation session discussing the draft vision and themes towards a National Architecture Policy as proposed by the Rise for Architecture working group. A multi-sector public discussion with ACO Toronto, ULI and DesignTO on the opportunities, challenges and merits of establishing a National Architecture Policy for Canada will be held on January 26, 2021 as part of the 2021 Design TO Festival – learn more about our Urban Affairs Forum | Does Canada Need a National Architecture Policy.
